Antartic adventure 'The First British Team to Cross Antarctica'
Dr James Facer-Childs
James is currently an emergency care doctor working in Birmingham and an adventurer with a couple of rare achievements to his name. Before starting medicine James took part in the First Indian Ocean Rowing Race and became the youngest pairs boat to row across any ocean after 103 days unsupported at sea. This is a race that saw only 4 boats out of 10 complete the crossing and has never been repeated since. More recently, James was selected as part of a 5 man team to traverse Antarctica, a feat completed by only 6 others before. Pioneering a new descent onto the Ross Ice Shelf down the Shackleton Glacier James and the team completed the traverse in 67 days. Both expeditions raised the challenges of surviving in remote, hostile environments and relied on team work and extreme endurance to accomplish. As a medical professional James is interested in exploring human potential and pushing the boundaries of human endeavour. While A&E is far from the remoteness of the ocean and ice it remains an exciting and challenging environment in which to work and keeps James busy before planning his next adventure.
