Professor Ian Ellis is an internationally distinguished pathologist with a career spanning over 30–40 years in pathology and breast cancer research. His work focuses on the classification, molecular pathology, and prognostic evaluation of breast cancer, helping to improve understanding of how the disease behaves and how it can be treated more effectively.
He combines academic research with clinical practice, serving as an Honorary Consultant Pathologist at Nottingham City Hospital, where he works closely with multidisciplinary teams.
Research & Contributions
Prof. Ellis has built an international reputation in clinical and translational breast disease research. Highlights of his academic impact include:
Authorship or co-authorship of hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific publications and book chapters in pathology and breast cancer.
Founder member of the faculty of the Nottingham International Breast Education Centre, which trains clinicians in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Past President of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
Past Chairman of the UK National Coordinating Committee for Breast Pathology and advisor to major organisations including the Royal College of Pathologists, World Health Organization (WHO) and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
Medical Director of Source Bioscience plc and founder of PathLore, a specialised pathology service.
His work has helped shape modern breast pathology standards and influenced international approaches to classifying and treating breast cancer.
